Magic Valley Alpacas is a place where we touch the magic of living through raising the awesome alpaca. You can find us in the beautiful agricultural valley of south-central Idaho, known as Magic Valley. It follows the Snake River across the southern part of the state, and was named when the intricate irrigation system built in the early 1900’s turned the sagebrush-filled desert into productive farmland.
Magic Valley Alpacas is a mother-daughter owned small business that operates from the farm that has been in the family since 1906. Grandpa Heidel homesteaded our farm in 1906 under the Carey Act. He and his family cleared the sagebrush, planted crops, trees, and built a home with their determination and a couple of teams of horses. His son and family came to take over the farming in 1945. We were still using a team of horses when this 3 rd generation was growing up, so learning to drive a team of horses, bucking hay and milking cows was part of their life. The 4th generation also grew up in the house Grandpa Heidel built from a Sears kit in the 1920’s. That 4 th generation is now farming the land and enjoying the country life. I am amazed at the family history of this place we call home.
Magic Valley Alpacas is located on Sunset Butte Ranch, which has been an organic farm for the past 25 years. The eco-friendly alpacas fit in to the sustainable lifestyle that has been developed here.
Mother and daughter brought alpacas to the farm in 2003, beginning with 3 bred females. Through careful breeding, they now have 29 alpacas on 4 acres of pasture. The neighbors were very curious about this non-traditional livestock, and many still slow down to watch them as they drive by. Most of the alpaca cria that have been born at Magic Valley Alpacas have been named after towns or places in Idaho. There really are towns named Santa, Wilder and Paul!
